I watched this film the other day and renewed my disgust and dismay over the damage being done by GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) to our health and to the environment.

At the start of the film we learn about the people of Haiti who refused seed donated by one industry giant and had the insight to recognize the motive behind this donation. They wanted to continue planting their own seeds, retain their right to those seeds, and not become indebted to the industry giant.

You may or may not have heard about the battles being fought over our Right to Know and to mandate labelling of GMOs. The fact that we are still fighting for the simple right to know what we are putting in our bodies and what we are feeding to our families while many other countries have enjoyed this right for years is frustrating and downright shameful.

The industry argues that there will be added cost to change the labels but the items they export to other countries are already being labelled! And they argue that if people see “genetically modified” on the label they won’t want to buy it. Doesn’t that prove that people don’t want GMOs and/or don’t trust that they are safe? Few long term studies have been done on the impacts of GMOs and one such study that is discussed in this film was later discredited for questionable reasons.

This film also reminded me of he sad truth that many people are not even aware of what is happening to our food supply. Have you ever asked your family members, friends, or coworkers if they know what a GMO is? Or if they are aware that 80-90% (or more!) of corn, canola, soy, cotton, and sugar beet crops are genetically modified?? And that over 80% of packaged goods contain GMOs???

We need more education and awareness around this topic and it seems we the people need to be the ones to spread the word. Watch this film and share it with your community.

Genetic Chile

An up-close look at the impending introduction of GMOs into yet another crop, this film centers around New Mexico’s green chile and the controversy around genetically engineering this revered pepper that residents feel is part of their heritage. New Mexico State University received a government grant to produce GMO green chiles and is beginning research while the community is fighting back and the local farmers are trying to prevent these organisms from being introduced into the crops. Includes discussion around safety, crop production and health, and impact to local industry. Great info about GMOs that every needs to know!

As I have been sharing information with others about GMOs I have been finding that many people have not heard this term or do not know what it means, so here’s a quick bit of info.

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism – another term commonly used is GE – Genetically Engineered. The process of Genetically Engineering or Modifying an organism involves inserting genetic material (DNA) from one species into the genetic material of another species to try to produce a desired effect not naturally found in the target species. This may be plant to plant, animal to animal, or cross animal and plant as in the tomato modified with genes from the flounder to make it resistant to freezing (I’m not making that up – search “fish tomato”). The risk with this process is that while the desired effect may be accomplished (soy more resistant to chemical herbicide, corn resistant to pests, salmon growth rate increased), the genetic material may be compromised in a way that results in undesirable or even dangerous effects such as production of allergens or toxins. Currently there are no regulations requiring safety testing for GMOs.

It should also be noted that as all things in nature are constantly evolving, weeds have become more resistant to the chemicals that GMO crops were engineered to resist, requiring higher doses of chemical herbicides. On the other hand not all things in nature evolve quickly enough to survive, and as such we are seeing the population of bees and butterflies on the decline as they are falling victim to the toxins in these new organisms taking over the plains.

Unfortunately GMOs have a strong presence in our food supply – about 90% of corn, canola, and cotton crops are genetically modified, as well as about 95% of the soy and sugar beet crops. Packaged goods with ingredients such as High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Soy Lecithin, Soybean Oil, Canola Oil, Monosodium Glutamate, Flavorings, Colorings, and many more are most likely made from genetically modified ingredients.

Outside the US many countries have either passed laws requiring the labeling of genetically engineered ingredients in products, or have banned them altogether. This year Maine and Connecticut passed GMO labeling laws and many other states are pursuing legislation to require labeling.

If you are living in a location that does not currently require labeling you can look for the Non GMO Project seal (see image below). This seal is granted to products that have undergone testing to verify that they do not contain genetically modified ingredients. You can find more information at their website:
